Freemocracy: Sanity On Both Sides Of The Pond

Freemocracy is an unlikely pipe dream right now, but that's not going to stop us trying to find ways to get there. And that's what this is all about. One of us deals with the trivialities of life and the other doesn't. You'll have to decide which is which for yourself.

Freemocracy: In The Beginning

The idea for the Freemocracy duo-blog has been in the proverbial pipeline for months now. For a long old time, it didn’t even have a name, much less anything concrete like content. It got its name when I saw ‘freemocracy’ in an article about Ancient Rome, in the BBC History magazine of all places. It referred to George W Bush and his incessant use of the phrase ‘freedom and democracy’ which in his playing-to-the-lowest-possible-common-denominator accent ends up sounding like ‘freemocracy’. Cool word, thought I. Let’s use it for our blog, said I. All right then, said Eb. And thus, Freemocracy was born.

I like to think of Freemocracy as a little bit like Utopia. It’s a perfect idea, the highest political concept, where all people are entirely equal and yet each special and unique. Under a freemocratic government, all of us can live happily and in peace. Everyone has enough of the things they need. Free and wondrous healthcare for all. A cure for AIDS, a cure for cancer. True freemocratic government listens to what their people say and then choose the best option, not the one that makes them rich or powerful. There is no Big Brother (Orwellian or Endemolian) because we don’t need it. We don’t care if Jordan/Paris/Lindsay are boffing Jude/Brad/Colin because our own lives are full and joyful. Little children laugh and sing and play through days of glorious sunshine.

A freemocratic world would be lovely indeed. One problem: It’s more or less impossible, especially with the world in its current state. It’s unlikely to happen while George W Bush and his sort twist it and pervert it into Newspeak for their own ends. But, Freemocracy is good. It is not arbeit mach frei or New Labour managementspeak. Freemocracy itself is pure and what we feeble, foolish human beings should be striving towards every single day.

Freemocracy is good. Freemocracy is unlikely, but that's not going to stop us trying to find ways to get there. And that's what this is all about. One of us deals with the trivialities of life and the other doesn't. You'll have to decide which is which for yourself.
